BSMTV News 9.25.15: Anika Noni Rose, Tisha Campbell-Martin
Accomplished Broadway actress and Hollywood “dream girl” Anika Noni Rose will star in the new remake of Alex Haley's epic saga ROOTS.
The Tony Award-winner, who was also the voice of Disney's first African-American princess in 2009's The Princess and the Frog, will play “Kizzy” in A&E Network's upcoming four-night, eight-hour scripted miniseries.
The attractive 43-year-old Bloomfield, Connecticut native and Florida A&M University graduate will join veteran actor and Academy Award-winner, Forest Whitaker, who's signed on for the role of “Fiddler”.
In other entertainment news, Tisha Campbell-Martin, who played “Gina” on the 90s Fox television series Martin and “Jay” on the ABC television sitcom My Wife and Kids, is making headlines with her powerful new music video for “Steel Here”, her first solo single in almost two decades.
The 46-year-old Oklahoma native opened up about being raped as a child and describes her new video as “a purging of anger, grudge, low self esteem, self-deprecation” and “negative emotion”.
Campbell, who married actor Duane Martin in 1996, scored a minor R&B hit in 1988 with “Be Alone Tonight” from the School Daze soundtrack.
